Fischer partners with Rosemary Conley CBE & Steps Centre

Blog post

Fischer Future Heat are proud to announce they have joined charity patron Rosemary Conley CBE in a new partnership supporting Steps.

Based in Shepshed, Leicestershire and started in 1994 by four families who recognised the benefits gained by their children from conductive education, Steps is “a centre of excellence dedicated to helping children with cerebral palsy and other motor disorders to fulfil their potential.” Steps cater for “children with cerebral palsy, possible chromosome disorders including Down’s syndrome or other conditions which affect the acquisition of motor skills.”

Steps offer many different activities for the children such as parent and baby sessions, parent and toddler sessions, special sessions for children about to start school, work to support young people in to adulthood, among others.

Approximately 1 in every 400 children born in the UK have cerebral palsy, with approximately 1,800 children diagnosed with cerebral palsy each year and there are an estimated 30,000 children in the UK currently with the disorder. Through conductive education, Steps are helping to make a difference to many small children’s lives, giving them the resources and help to achieve their full potential.

Conductive education is an educational system, specifically designed for children with motor disorders and is based on the work of Hungarian Professor Andras Peto.

Peto “developed a framework for an educational model in which children with disabilities could have an education that met their particular physical and intellectual needs.”

Conductive education is designed to assist children in achieving their full potential and seeks to develop their independence. It is designed to focus on the children, not their disabilities.

Not only does conductive education help children, it has also proved suitable for people who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or those who have suffered a stroke.

Steps started by working with just 5 families and now provide professional services to more than 50 families. The charity have grown from renting a single nursery room in Ashmount Special School, to owning their own premises which they purchased via a fundraising campaign in 2006. Steps have also received support in the past from UPS, Caterpillar, Primary Care Trusts and charitable trusts such as Henry Smith’s charity, The National Lottery and BBC Children in Need.

“When Rosemary talked to Keith and I about Steps and the vital work it does, we had no hesitation in pledging our support for this fantastic cause. Family is everything for us, and Steps provides parents with the knowledge, confidence and strength they need to help their children. This is something every parent can identify with. Steps is about ability not disability and we are delighted to join with Rosemary and the team at Steps.”

– Maria Bastian, founder of Fischer Future Heat.

One Steps’ dad wrote in a letter:

“Collectively, the Steps team are a group with great technical knowledge, enthusiasm and deep empathy driven by their passion to help children that have been disadvantaged by their condition at such a young age. They help children like my son in a fun and positive environment, adapting themselves and activities to the needs of the child. They can see the untapped potential in every Steps child; striving to bring that potential to the surface. They believe in these special children.”
