Not only can you store any surplus energy from a solar panel system in the battery, thus reducing how much energy you draw from the grid, you can also charge it with your normal electricity tariffs. Let’s take Economy7 as an example. Overnight, you buy electricity at a much cheaper rate and through the day, you pay more. But when do you use most of your energy?
Unless you are a night owl or have an outdated night storage system installed, you will use a majority of your energy through the day, not during the 12am-7am hours where you receive cheap energy.
What does this mean? It means you are paying more per unit of energy you use. Let’s see how the figures stack up. In our example, we will use a made up Economy7 tariff (based on tariffs we have seen on price comparison websites such as USwitch).
We will use 16p as the day rate and 10p as the night rate.
If you chose to install one of our 10kW batteries, you could store up to 10 units of electricity at any one time. Overnight, when energy is cheaper, you could buy 10 units of electricity from your supplier to fill the battery, at only 10p per unit.
Then, during the day, when you would be paying 16p per unit, you could use the 10kW of energy in the battery you stored overnight to power your home before you draw anything from the grid. This would give you a saving of 60p per day on your electricity costs.
Saving 60p per day works out to be a saving of £219 per year on your electricity bill (60 x 365). Who could say no? The great thing about this system? Because you are simply drawing energy from the grid, you will be able to store the full 10kW whether it is winter or summer – it will not change.
If you’re concerned about climate change (which we all should be), you could even switch to an energy supplier who provide 100% renewable electricity, such as our energy partner Outfox the Market. There are also talks of certain energy suppliers introducing “flexi-tariffs” in the near future. Energy suppliers will use up to 48 different data points throughout the day to charge a number of different energy rates at times where more energy is being used. This means, theoretically, you could end up paying up to 48 different electricity rates in one single day.
By installing our battery, you would also be able to combat flexi-tariffs by charging the battery during the cheaper hours and using that electricity when prices are higher.
