Green Day, or as it’s now known ‘Energy Security Day’ has arrived with the government unveiling their revised ambition in order to reach Net Zero by 2050. With further announcements to follow in the autumn, today gives us a taster of what the government intends to do in order to reduce the countries carbon footprint and set the course for a greener, electric future.
After being criticised for not being detailed enough when the UK’s Net Zero policy was first released in 2022. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, said the new measures announced on Thursday would:
“Ensure our energy security in the long term with more affordable, clean energy from Britain, so we can drive down energy prices and grow our economy.”.
But what does mean for you, electricity and the future?
Lower Cost
Amongst the 60 policies, pages of proposal and detail announced today, the path towards renewable energy has been made clearer by lower cost, support and clarity for alternatives. Specifically, a drastic change in the levels of tax paid for on electricity.
Currently a ‘Green Tax’ is applied to electricity bills. These taxes can add up to £131 to the average annual statement of a homeowner, A huge 12% of total cost, as opposed to just £34 (3.4%) for those committed to gas. Under the ‘Net Zero Growth Plan’ these taxes will be ‘rebalanced’ saving you up to £100 on your electricity bill and for gas users, adding up to £100.
These plans are under a wider initiative which would see Britain having ‘the cheapest electricity in Europe by 2035’.
Making The Switch To An Electric Home
If there was ever a time to make the personal and conscious switch to an electric powered home, future proofing and saving pounds, it’s now. With the arrival of ‘Green Day’ the great electric charge is on. Other measures announced featured the ‘decoupling’ of electricity and gas.
In order to reach demand, we still rely on natural gas, using gas to power generators, despite gas providing under half of the total electricity in the UK. In recent years gas has set electricity costs 84% of the time. Separating the two will drive costs down as we look towards renewables, allowing you to bring Net Zero into your home.
Electric Radiators
With the potential to be penalised for continuing to use carbon heavy systems. The easiest way to begin updating and modernising is with electric radiators. Heating the home with electricity is 100% efficient, no heat is wasted, as opposed to gas, with at most can only be 90% efficient.
Effortlessly installed and compatible with standard 13amp plug sockets in the home already. Going electric provides a greater level of control over your usage. Fischer’s Electric Heaters provide wireless control with a Fischer Wireless Thermostat, as standard, reducing energy wastage and welcoming the future.
Electric Boilers
The government also reaffirmed their commitment to electricity. Setting a target for one fifth of cars in the UK to be electric by 2035, and pledging a further £380m towards growing the UK’s electric vehicle charging network. Banning gas boilers in new build properties by 2025, with musings on an outright ban by the 2030s also resurfaced.
Electric Boilers are 100% efficient, like their radiator counterparts, requiring minimal maintenance, dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of the home. With the added benefit of being able to combine Fischer Electric Boilers with electric instant heated water systems like the Aquafficient, removing the need for tanks in the home, and providing a sustainable lifespan of 50 years.
The potential to upgrade and start a seamless electric experience inside the home from is very much available now.
Keeping Green On The Road
Outside the home, with the government’s electric cars target, having an EV charger to hand is one way to be prepared.
Fischers EV can cut your carbon emissions by 20%. Intelligently charging of your car at the cheapest time for electricity and comes with Dynamic Load Balancing. This means that the EV will automatically change the maximum power to the charger in order to balance the electricity usage in your home.
‘Green Day’ provided many insights into the strategies to achieve Net Zero by 2050. With more to come in the autumn, there is no reason not to begin your personal journey to Net Zero, today.
