6 Tips to Help YOU Prepare for Autumn & Winter

Blog post

That first day of winter is something we all have to prepare for. Waking up in the early hours to find the car windows are frozen with a sheet of glistening ice. As you look out of the kitchen window, drinking your early morning cuppa, you notice the grass is shimmering in the early morning sunlight. The birds are chirping and as you step out of the door, you can see your breath in front of you.

Not only does it mean it’s time to dig out that thick coat you bought last year, it’s also time to switch on the heating.

But it’s good to plan ahead. Here are just a few things you should do to make sure you’re prepared for the cold and ice.

Change your duvet for a winter version

We’ve all had those nights in summer where we didn’t even need a duvet, and most of us swap out our heavy duty winter bedding for a more lightweight alternative for summer. There is nothing worse than waking up on that first cold morning only to realise you’re prepared for an Indian summer rather than a British Winter.

Make sure you’re ahead of the game and use that lovely, cosy bedding well in advance!

Set up your thermostat in advance

Changed your program for the warmer weather? Not sure which heating program to set for the cold weather? Now is the perfect time to plan ahead. Make sure that your heating program is all set and ready to go for those cold winter mornings. There’s nothing worse than being a few days behind when it comes to heating.

Buy some de-icer for the car

There’s nothing worse than going out to your car in a hurry to get to work and finding your windows are thick with ice and you have no way to clear it. You can pick up a can or bottle of de-icer relatively cheaply from most supermarkets and it’s a life saver. Don’t leave it too late!

Make sure you are getting the best deal on energy

Heating costs money to run, but there are ways to make it cheaper. A quick Google search will tell you which energy provider will give you the best and cheapest deal on gas and electricity. Before the heating goes back on, double check that you’re getting the best deal possible.

If not, switching supplier nowadays is relatively easy and most suppliers will do all of the hard work for you. Don’t forget to think about the environment and consider a 100% renewable energy supplier this winter.

Draught proof your home

Many of us leave those pesky draught problems until it’s too late. Have you ever been sat watching TV in the evening, only to be disturbed by a cold breeze on your feet? Sort it out!

Make sure your home is completely draught proof to stay as warm as possible. It may even help you keep your energy bills down by reducing heat loss…

Upgrade your heating system

The most important appliance in your home in winter is your heating. That’s a given. But why put up with an outdated, bulky and uncontrollable night system when there are better, more efficient and controllable alternatives available on the market?
