March proved to be a fantastic month in the push towards Net Zero. Electricity generated from zero carbon sources in one day peaked at 83% and the average rounded off to around 47%.
The news is a huge boost for the UK as it hopes to drastically reduce its carbon usage and reach Net Zero by 2050. It comes under the backdrop of a chilling report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) also last month, which was described as a “final warning” from scientists, in the hope to prevent global warming over 1.5°C.
Renewable Push
The figures have arrived at a time of considerable pressure for the government as it hopes to give a much-needed boost to it’s climate plans. With the debut of revised plans to tackle climate change, on the so called ‘Green Day’ it’s apparent the UK is still heavily reliant on gas to produce electricity. Last month, 33.7% of electricity generated was by gas. Whilst renewables as a collective are pushing strong numbers, individually, it’s not so much the case, aside from wind accounting for 29% generated. However, movement is happening in a steady upwards direction.
Other positives for reducing carbon usage is the welcome fact multiple high emission generators are in steep decline, with coal suffering a significant reduction from 13.6% generation 2018 to only 0.5% this March. This mirrors in with another record; the UK achieving 213 days without coal usage at all – compared to only 73 days the previous month. Milestones like these are exactly what the UK needs to be achieving if it has any hope of reaching the goals set out in the revised climate policy and reaching Net Zero.
A definite shift is taking place and with March being something of a victory in the battles against climate change on a source level, residents are also looking for more eco-friendly ways to heat their homes away from traditional methods. Fischer understands this and that heating isn’t a ‘One Size Fit’s All’ approach, with a variety of different products jumping to prominence in recent years, switching to an eco-friendly approach, has never been easier.
Options Are Out There
Air Source Heat Pumps are becoming the popular, upcoming choice with 16 million installed across Europe, jumping 26% in just two years! In England, Wales and Scotland that number is just over 280,000 and incentives are there to help have one installed. One of which is the Government Boiler Upgrade Scheme – which offers a £5,000 grant to switch to an Air Source Heat Pump.
Offering a more flexible option than the market standard, Fischer’s Air Source Heat Pump has the luxury of being the only ASHP on the market that separates the hot water element and heating element – because of this separation, you can switch off the heating element in the summer, providing yourself with peace and quiet when you are most likely to be using the garden, whilst still enjoying hot water, on demand.
Air Source Heat Pumps aren’t the only shift occurring in the heating market. 2.1 million households in the UK have electric only heating with the number only set to increase once the ban on gas boilers in new build properties comes into place in 2025. Heating your home using electricity is a far more energy efficient way of heating the home. Fischer’s Electric Radiators are 100% efficient. They retain heat effectively due to their 40mm HeatCore and you possess ultimate control over their output thanks to the Exclusive Wireless Thermostat.
Taking Full Control Of Your Heating
Optimising your home with a combination of the Fischer Air Source Heat Pump and Electric Radiators and a dual hot water system with a buffer tank – the Aquafficient Eco +, will provide fantastic control, lowering carbon emissions and energy use, without the loss of warmth. As ASHP’s operate at slightly lower temperatures, the ‘Fischer Warm Home Hybrid Package’ combines all these together, with the radiator and ASHP working in perfect harmony to heat your room quickly and efficiently with no worries and no loss of warmth. Providing you the best of both worlds when it comes to electric heating.
As society becomes more energy aware, its statistics like where the UK’s energy is coming from and how it’s being produced that are only going enter the public consciousness even more. Making the conscious switch to a renewable energy source, allows your personal carbon emissions to start falling and aiding the task to #PowerToZero
